This comprehensive guide covers the essential skills required for intermediate iOS developers to take their expertise to the next level. From technical skills to user interface design, debugging and troubleshooting, and collaboration and communication, this guide provides a roadmap for intermediate iOS developers to enhance their proficiency and create high-quality iOS apps. If you are interested in junior skills, take a look at Essential Skills for Junior iOS Developers.

Introduction

Becoming an intermediate iOS developer is an exciting milestone in your journey as an app developer. At this stage, you have a solid foundation in iOS development and are ready to level up your skills. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the essential skills that every intermediate iOS developer should possess. Whether you’re looking to enhance your job prospects, work on more complex projects, or simply become a better developer, these skills will pave the way for your continued growth and success.

An intermediate iOS developer is someone who has a solid understanding of the foundational concepts of iOS app development and has successfully worked on several iOS applications. They are familiar with the programming languages and tools used in iOS app development, and are able to independently solve problems and implement new features.

In order to become an intermediate iOS developer, you should already have solid knowledge in the skills described in my previous story — Essential Skills for Junior iOS Developers: A Comprehensive Guide.

Solid Understanding of Swift and Objective-C

Swift and Objective-C is our everything! And I am not joking. As an intermediate iOS developer, it’s crucial to have a strong command over these programming languages. Swift is the primary language for iOS app development now, and being proficient in Swift will enable you to write clean, efficient, and maintainable code. Dive deeper into advanced Swift concepts such as optionals, generics, closures, and protocols. Stay updated with the latest Swift features and best practices to ensure you’re using the language to its fullest potential.

Proficiency in UIKit, SwiftUI, and App Architecture

UIKit is the foundational framework for building iOS user interfaces. Intermediate iOS developers should have a thorough understanding of UIKit components, such as view controllers, views, navigation controllers, and table views. Additionally, familiarize yourself with architectural patterns like Model-View-Controller (MVC), Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM), or Model-View-Presenter (MVP). This knowledge will help you design and develop robust and maintainable iOS applications. There are tons of different variations for mentioned app architectures, but also others like Redux, VIPER and etc.

Experience with Auto Layout and Adaptive UI

Creating responsive user interfaces is a vital skill for intermediate iOS developers. Auto Layout is Apple’s powerful layout system that enables you to create adaptive and flexible interfaces that adapt to different device sizes and orientations. Learn how to create constraints programmatically as well as using Interface Builder. Gain expertise in handling various layout challenges and supporting different screen sizes, from iPhone SE to iPad Pro.

Knowledge of Core Data and Persistence

Many iOS applications require data persistence, and Core Data is Apple’s framework for managing object graphs and persisting data. Intermediate iOS developers should understand Core Data’s concepts, such as entities, attributes, relationships, and fetching mechanisms. Explore advanced topics like migrations, performance optimizations, and concurrency to ensure your app’s data management is efficient and reliable. Also, do research on other technologies, hint for you - Realm.

Proficiency in Networking and API Integration

In today’s interconnected world, networking and API integration skills are crucial for iOS developers. Learn how to make network requests using URLSession or popular networking libraries like Alamofire. Understand different data formats such as JSON and XML and how to parse and serialize data effectively. Explore authentication mechanisms, error handling, and best practices for building scalable and secure networking layers. Last year I noticed GraphQL became more popular, so take a look at it.

Familiarity with Debugging and Performance Optimization

As an intermediate iOS developer, you should possess strong debugging and performance optimization skills. Learn to use Xcode’s debugging tools effectively, including breakpoints, LLDB debugger, and Xcode Instruments. Understand common performance bottlenecks such as slow rendering, excessive memory usage, or network latency, and apply optimization techniques to enhance your app’s speed, responsiveness, and efficiency.

Knowledge of Core Animation and User Experience

Creating visually appealing and interactive user interfaces is essential for providing an engaging user experience. Gain proficiency in Core Animation to add smooth transitions, animations, and visual effects to your app. Understand gesture recognizers, UIKit dynamics, and UIKit’s built-in animation capabilities. This knowledge will enable you to create delightful and intuitive user interfaces that captivate your users.

Conclusion

Becoming an intermediate iOS developer requires continuous learning and honing of your skills. By mastering the essential skills discussed in this comprehensive guide, you’ll be well-equipped to take on more challenging iOS development projects and achieve your career goals. Remember to stay updated with the latest iOS frameworks, libraries, and technologies.
